Sportivate at Longeaton Judo Club - SPORT FOR ALL!

Responding to the legacy pledge made by Seb Coe in Singapore in 2005, Sportivate will give teenagers and young adults - who currently aren’t playing sport in their own time - the chance to receive six to eight weeks of coaching in a sport of their choice.

Thanks to £565,640 of Lottery investment in Derbyshire over the next four years, at least 5,303 local people will be able to take part.

Sportivate will be launched in Derbyshire on Tuesday 14 June at Long Eaton Judo Club, which is one of dozens of clubs across the county which will run introductory sports sessions as part of Sportivate.

A one-off judo taster session will be staged at Long Eaton Judo Club, where participants will be joined by Olympian Steve Gawthorpe, who competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He was also coach to the GB visually-impaired team which competed at the Olympics in Beijing in 2008.

Steve said "Sportivate sessions will be a great way for young people who will be inspired by the Olympics to take up a new sport to ‘try before they buy. The Olympics is the biggest sporting event to take place every four years and is the event which inspires everybody"

"At the moment we have an Xbox culture with a drought on young people playing physical sports, so I would love to see more young people giving judo a try and taking up the sport.”

Sportivate Judo, an eight-week beginners’ course at Long Eaton Judo Club, will start on Sunday, September 25, 5pm to 6pm.

Participants will receive eight hours of coaching by a British Judo Association coach, kit hire and insurance for £10.
